This is why I shoot RAW...

So first of all what the hell is a raw file? raw file is the picture or image as the sensor of the camera sees it. It is like a film negative, in this case a digital negative. Instead of letting the camera take control when you have your file type as a JPEG, you can actually do the processing yourself, and make the image the way you like.

Now, raw files aren't pretty, it is very easy to be seduced by the over-saturated, over-contrasty image that the JPEG creates; when you look at the back of the camera you think you want your picture to look that way, but in reality the JPEG is compressing all that precious data and dumping pixels into oblivion, where you can never get them back.

I'm not going to lie, it took me a while to understand the importance of raw files, I mean, why would I want to create more work for myself if the camera was already creating a "pretty good photo" right? Wrong, "pretty good" is not good, "pretty good" is lazy, "pretty good" doesn't let you grow. I was limiting myself to what the camera made for me, and allowing it to take away the possibilities the raw file provides.

Sometimes the change is subtle, some color grading, contrast, and boom! you already got what you wanted.

Sometimes it requires a little more, with this image I was already pretty happy with the raw file, the girl's expression was so great that I didn't think I needed to do anything else to it, but then I started editing the picture, and I was so much more happier with the color, the light, her expression is even more defined thanks to the editing, and I was able to take it to the next level.

And other times, you are not so in love with the raw file, and it requires a little bit more work. You know when you take a picture and you really should have bump up that exposure another stop, but you didn't. Because I shot raw, I was able to add 1 and half stops of light to the image, dealt better with the noise, and then played with color and character. You see, raw files are your friends, it's like having a magic wand to fix your mistakes.

Yes, you have to get used to a little big more work, but at the end it is so gratifying. With amazing tools like Lightroom, Alien Skin, Photoshop, etc., you are not really adding that much work, you are creating a different workflow.

It's worth mentioning that raw files are much bigger than JPEGs, which means, your memory card fills up quickly and your hard drive storage space runs out of room. I am on my third terabyte, however, it is a an investment I am willing to make because of the many advantages that come with the format.

So in conclusion, shooting raw allows you to record more information, get better detail, add/subtract light, easily change white-balance, and because you are creating an image from a high resolution file to begin with, your prints will be better, period. So do yourself a favor, if you are shooting digital, shoot raw and let your imagination run.

Spring Goddess Shoot { Denver Portrait Photographer }

The latest collaboration with my hair and makeup artist Bernie Rausseo, was just the bomb. I am so in love with these pictures I can't even put it into words. Bernie had this idea of a simple dress, a beautiful girl, and Cherry Blossoms; thing is, we couldn't find them anywhere. One day a couple of months ago, we were driving around and saw these trees, at closed inspection we didn't think they were Cherry Blossoms, but they were blooming with gorgeous pink flowers everywhere, so we decided that would do. It also had been raining a lot in Colorado, so when we saw the trees and the sun was out, we called up a few girls, and Kati was available (THANK YOU KATI!), and it was just meant to be. Special thanks to our amazing assistants Myriam and Magnolia who rocked with behind the scene shots, holding reflectors, and much more!

Here are our favorite pictures of the shoot.

New Cover Work for Give Magazine

It's always exciting to see your hard work on print. This is the work I did for Give Magazine of The Denver Foundation.You'll never know from the pictures that the cover was shot in the sunniest day of the winter, but we managed to cover the sun (as much as we could) and get great expressions from our subjects! Myriam Elisa Portraits { Denver Portrait Photography }

Myriam is a very good friend of mine and she's gorgeous. I like to joke about how I only know beautiful people, but then I shoot them and I realize that it's true, because they are beautiful inside and out. Myriam was so fun to shoot, she was up for any ideas that I came up with and she came up with a few herself. She loves vintage looking clothing and loves dressing up, plus she has such a classic beauty look, that her style really works for the type of editing I decided to do, a vintage inspired editing.

 Myriam helps me out whenever she's available, she's a fantastic Public Relations and Marketing Mastermind so she always does a fantastic job. She helps me with promotion, production, sometimes even hair and makeup, but she's hesitant when it comes to being in front of the lens, but this time she said yes and she was perfect.

I am also in love with my blue paper backdrop and it ended up being perfect for this!

Here are a few pictures that really stood out.

Lighthearted Autumn {Denver Portrait Photography}

I love creating conceptual images. Here is one I've been wanting to do for a while, I just needed the Fall to be in its full swing. I am one of those people who dream a lot, not just for the future, but actually I have tons of dreams when I sleep, I also fly a lot in said dreams, so I am trying to capture with this image a little bit of what I experience when "I fly" or "levitate."

This is the first of an "In the air" series I started. I can't wait to create the next!

Until next time!

Lenny Jonas Portraits - { Denver Portrait Photography }

I had the opportunity to shoot Lenny a few weeks ago. He contacted me because I had the pleasure of making his daughter's senior portraits, and he remembered he liked my work!

He is a veterinarian, he wanted pictures for marketing and also to share with his family. All these pictures are in his house, how cool is that, no need to go to a park when you have a beautiful home or backyard. The pictures are all directed natural light (aka: my assistant holding a silver reflector), and with post-production in Lightroom.

I loved photographing him! Here are a few of his favorites.

Photographing Gloria Steinem { Denver Portrait Photographer }

Back in 2013 my friend Roweena Naidoo, who is the founder of The Blossom Project, an organization that works to amplify the voices of girls, inspiring them to disrupt the status quo and make a positive difference in the world, called me to booked me for an event she had in March 2014. I told her that, of course I was available, it was a year out, so I put it in my calendar.

The closer the date got, she told me that Gloria Steinem was going to be her keynote speaker, and I got really excited, I mean with all the amazing things she has done to move women forward I was ecstatic! My excitement took over and I asked Roweena if I could have 15 minutes with her so I could do a portrait, and she said yes!

The day of the event came and I had my set up ready to go, and I was thinking about what to tell her when she finally came to the door for the portrait. Things ran a little late and I only got 3 minutes and 45 seconds to talk to Gloria, make her comfortable, and do the portrait. With the time limitation I got a little nervous and the only thing I said was, "two of my idols did your portrait and now I get to photograph you" while my friend/assistant yelled "no pressure!" I did the portrait in that limited time with a room fool of people waiting to talk and take "selfies" with her, I kept calm and took my portrait and then we went on with the VIP reception and the event.

She was obviously amazing, poised and perfect. She has done this a million times so the shoot went great. I am pleased with the result and the fact that it was done right around her 80th birthday makes it more meaningful.

I waited this long to share the picture because I wanted to make sure it was what it represented her well. Take a minute to visit The Blossom Project website and donate.

Here's the portrait, I called it "Glorious Gloria" and I love it.
